Etymology of philosophy
Branches of philosophy
The advantage of philosophy

Philosophy as a concept has no particular definition that is universally acceptable to all professional philosophers.

A critic in 1936 argued that: what kind of philosophy one chooses depends.
Consequently upon what kind of man one is; for a philosophical system is not a piece of dead household furniture, which one can use or lay aside at pleasure but is animated by the soul of the man who has it.

Although, philosophy has been given different meanings by different  people of all ages, the standard of philosophy to those who are trained as philosophers remains uncompromised.

The Greek word philein (to love) or philla (love) and Sophia (wisdom) form the etymology of “philosophy” which literally means “love of Wisdom”, love of knowledge”. It is an inquiry into the unknown with a view to having a cleanser understanding of the issues or problems of man and his environment.

The broad branches of philosophy are metaphysics, Epistemology and Axiology.

Cosmology, ontology and causality are sub-branches of metaphysical equally, logic is a branch of philosophy developed from epistemology, while ethics and aesthetic.

Philosophy stands first among disciplines that make up the department of educational foundations in Nigeria universities and even in institutes of Education.

As a basic foundation course, it is also one of the courses that are made compulsory for all undergraduates students in the faculty of Education.
Philosophy of education equips the teacher as it prepares him to conveniently occupy any higher assignment in the nations education industry.
It further helps the teacher to have a balanced sense of judgment and better organization of classroom situation for effect and efficient teaching and learning philosophy of education equips the teacher with other nation’s philosophies and education.  This will make for comparative analysis which will enhance the teacher’s job in the class.
Closely related to the above is that knowledge of philosophy of education equips the teacher with the sound philosophers. These philosophies will enable the teacher in his contemporary classroom situation.

Philosophy has played a role in the development of leaders, their education and subsequently, their rule. Philosophy influences the mind to thought. It should not influence the minds of individuals to accept the thoughts of others or their beliefs but to think and respond for themselves.
Philosophy should lead us all to the improvement of ourselves as individuals as a community and as a people or civilization when placed in the context of nation.

It should question the very foundation of who we are in order to rule or be ruled.

It should our leaders to see the point of view of the governed in order to make a better society and nation but not at the sacrifice or cost of ourselves.

Philosophy should lead us to the experience of thought and consequence so that mistakes can be prevented.

Philosophy should not lead us to conflict or war.

In order to stand as a nation for an enduring civilization and people, philosophy needed to introduce the definition of its people and not be defined by consequence and fault.

Philosophy can not fall should yield a people that can think as individuals, respond as a people and agree as civilization. Philosophy also played a major role in the Education sector.

Some of the major steps taken by the Federal Government on education after independences, despite the setback caused by Nigeria Civil War were the institution of National Curriculum Conference in 1969, and the establishment of more polytechnics, to boost the nation’s manpower.

Both philosophy and education ate as old as man, but they manifest in man, and his environment in different ways. What man thinks about himself, about others, about existence, about his environment, about the universe, about knowledge his values and aesthetics and how he goes about presenting these things in his own world view about life and existence.

It is needless to go discussing the other objectives. All the objectives are suffering from the same disease. The ‘disease’ is the lack of a well-defined national philosophy has led to the absence of a sound philosophy of education in Nigeria. This is where are.
